Foreword to Akker 5 Nations tour presentation by the President of the Akker, Morné du Plessis July 1986 This group of young men of Stellenbosch have decided to get involved in seeking solutions to the enormous social problems they find themselves confronted with in South Africa. Their contribution to the normalisation of this situation has been to establish a Rugby club -Die Akker - that would be above all completely devoid of any ethnic and racial divisions. Their sincerity to this objective is illustrated in the fact that although they are by the nature of the circumstances in which they find themselves, a predominantly white club, they have decided to join the Boland Sara league (a Black Rugby association). While their ideals for this club and for the normalisation of their society must never be dimmed, they are and must be aware of the obstacles that confront them, |
these obstacles are largely results of generations of neglect for and apathy towards these social problems. It is this apathy and neglect that the members of the Akker Rugby club no longer accept. They have received a incredibly generous sponsorship from the company CASE, which ensured continuity to their ideas, and who along with many other South Africans wish them success in their venture.
